What is your real estate experience? 4 questions

Normally, I don't require or ask anyone to comment or post to this blog. However, I would like everyone (all 35 students) to respond to this posting.

Chapter 1 discusses the market for real estate knowledge. It would be useful to me and possibly the rest of the class to get a feel for the level of real estate experience in this section.

Please comment to this posting by answering the following four (4) questions:

(1) Are you currently employed in the real estate industry? If so, what is your background (brokerage, appraisal, property management, investing, etc.).

(2) Have you done the following:
a) rented an apartment
b) purchased a house
c) sold a house
d) made an investment in real estate

(3) Is anyone in your family in the real estate business or had an interesting real estate related experience?

(4) Finally, please give us one interesting fact about yourself that is non-real estate related.

I might mention that real estate experience is not a course prerequisite and I have found no relationship between prior real estate experience and success in this course (students with no prior real estate experience have worked hard and done very well). Success typically depends on the amount of time and effort you put into the course this semester.

Please ues the "comments" function below to reply to this post (will keep everyone's reply organized with this posting).

Cheers,

(1) Are you currently employed in the real estate industry? If so, what is your background (brokerage, appraisal, property management, investing, etc.).

I am not currently employed in the real estate industry.

(2) Have you done the following:a) rented an apartmentb) purchased a housec) sold a housed) made an investment in real estate

I have done none of the above for now, but will be in the near future possibly purchasing a condo.

(3) Is anyone in your family in the real estate business or had an interesting real estate related experience?

My mom was in realestate for a little while but her license is currently on hold as she decided she wanted to wait until she left her job to pursue the real estate business, but she has taken and passed the exam.

(4) Finally, please give us one interesting fact about yourself that is non-real estate related.

I would have to say the most interesting fact about myself would be that I was born in Scotland and lived in Holland for 6 years before moving here when I was 7. All my family except for an aunt and uncle currently reside in Scotland as well so I try to visit once a year.

I am not currently, nor do I intend to be. Real estate issues do, however, sometimes have an impact on my job. I design hospitals and other commercial buildings. This is one reason I am taking this course - to gain a more complete understanding of real estate principles.

(2) Have you done the following:a) rented an apartmentb) purchased a housec) sold a housed) made an investment in real estate
a) Yes; b) Yes; c) Yes; d) No

(3) Is anyone in your family in the real estate business or had an interesting real estate related experience?
Not to my knowledge.

(4) Finally, please give us one interesting fact about yourself that is non-real estate related.
Hmmm... The most interesting thing about me is that I may actually finish my degree at age 42... I'm married, 4 kids and currently in the market to both sell and buy a house.

I am not employed in the real estate industry but I am emplyed in the Architectural/Planning industry.

(2) Have you done the following:a) rented an apartmentb) purchased a housec) sold a housed) made an investment in real estate

I have rented an apartment and am looking into purchasing land to build a home.

(3) Is anyone in your family in the real estate business or had an interesting real estate related experience?

My cousin is in the real estate industry.

(4) Finally, please give us one interesting fact about yourself that is non-real estate related.

(1) No, no real estate relations at all
(2) a) rented an apartment

1) Are you currently employed in the real estate industry? I am not in the real estate industry.

(2) Have you done the following:
a) rented an apartment-- Yes

b) purchased a house-- twice, going on three after graduation...

c) sold a house- yes, what an ordeal

d) made an investment in real estate-- I've been thinking of my next door neighbors house, but hasn't proved to be a viable option yet.

(3) My sister is a realtor in the Rock Hill/Charlotte SC area. She was born to do what she is doing. She's a bit pushy for me, but seems to be very sucessful at what she does. My brother is a rental agent in Manhattan. He lives and works in NYC. He is a licenced realtor as well. The competition is crazy. He has so many great stories. He went from being an exective chef to an agent. Quite a jump, but he loves it.

(4) I am finally graduating after 12 years of working on this degree (there were many pauses in there), but I managed to get the remainder of the BA in 1.5 years with non stop class taking. I am trying to beat my daugther to graduation, so that has helped me get finished.

3)Umm.. no one in my family is directly in the real estate business but my parents have owned several homes and sold them. Currently my parents are trying to sell one of their houses that is located in Arizona and are flying out to look at the property to see what needs to be done. (Apparently after the last renters moved out a water line broke and flooded the house).

4)I currently work at Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine as an aquatics supervisor and at NRH20 Family Waterpark located in NRH as an operations supervisor. My plan is to stay in the waterpark industry and see where that takes me.

(1) I am not employed in the real estate industry. I took some licensing courses about six years ago, however I did not pursue a real estate license.

(2) (a)Yes, in my lifetime I have rented several apartments. (b) I have purchased three homes. (c) I have sold two of those homes and am living in the third. (d) I guess I consider my homes an investment in real estate because I purchase them below market and in turn roll them over after a few years and use the equity I gain to roll into the next home.
(3) My mother built homes (as a licensed builder) as an investment, then would move us into them, then turn them over within 5 to six years. So she was not a realtor, but was a very savvy business person when it comes to gaining capital on the homes she built.

(4) I think the bizarre blend of talents I have makes me interesting. Even though I am much older than your average student (by about 18 years) I still feel young and tend to forget the age gap. I am an accounting major, BUT…. I don’t fit the ‘bean counter’ stereotype. I lived a great life and was a ballet dancer as a teenager who danced with Gregory Heinz on one occasion and Jennifer Beals (Flash Dance) on another and also was an accomplished clarinet player in high school competing in state competition. I started my degree in Psychology in 1989 so most of my free time was spent volunteering with Special Olympics at that time. My work background included accounting in addition to different types of analyst positions in sales and computers. These days, mostly I love technology (build my own computers for fun, gaming, etc.) and most who know me consider me a computer geek.
